Another Bag

I made started this bag on Friday and while making it I realized I had ran out of black webbing, so on Saturday morning I made a mad dash to the fabric store. I wanted to be able to mail it out Saturday since it was the mail deadline date for this swap. I really procrastinated on this, but I blame it all on the crazy budget schedule that I have going on at work.

Anyway, here is the final product:

Back:
It is the same pattern that I make my other tote bags. But this time I decided to make it a little narrow and a little longer. I really like how it came out.

Snow Globe Postcard Fail....

For one of the swaps I am in, I am supposed to make a Snow Globe postcard using this tutorial and send it to my partner. I made one yesterday and after much work is was a failure. I decided that I was going to wait for the weekend to try round two, but I REALLY wanted to try again NOW.

So after I cooked dinner today I put in the movie Remember Me (by the way if you have not seen that movie, you must. I will warn you though, it will have you in tears by the end) and got to work on my card.

It took me almost two hours to almost complete it. I know, I am slow. I really wanted it to be perfect. Well, it is not perfect and this is why, the stupid sides of the card wont seal!!! I do not know if it is the type of paper glue that I am using or the paper is playing games with me.

This is what it currently looks like:

I am leaving it under heavy books overnight. Maybe with some drying time and pressure the card will seal, but for now I am calling it FAILED. If by some miracle it seals I will finish it tomorrow and post the final product. If it does not, it is back to the drawing board.

Crafty Weekend

On Saturday while Mr. P was at work, I spent my morning singing at the top of my lungs to Michael Jackson's Dangerous CD and sewing my life away making this:

Front

Back
I made this bag for my partner on Swab-Bot for the "Make me a Handmade Tote Swap". I had so much fun making it and loved how it turned out, that I signed up for another handmade tote swap.

After that it was off to make a "Handmade Bookmark". My partner loves Hello Kitty. So I only thought it appropriate to make her a Hello Kitty bookmark. I added silver embossed stars, then I reinforced the bookmark by adding as a backing a pretty cloud scrap booking paper. To protect the bookmark since it was made from card stock, I put it in a plastic holder. I used a star shaped hole puncher to add a hole to the top of the plastic holder, got some pretty blue jewelry thread, added a pretty pink bead and hung it from the hole.

These final 2 packages also went off to new homes. I was so excited that I forgot to take pictures of what I put in them.

I mailed off everything today. I am pretty sure the bag and the last two envelopes will get to their new homes quickly. The bookmark I am not so sure how long it will take to arrive to it's new home, since it is going to Canada. I just hope they all liked what I sent. I put a lot of thought and love into everything.

Today, I also received quiet a bit of mail. But like a little kid, I was too excited and started playing with everything I got and forgot to take pictures. But I did snap a quick picture of a postcard that I received so that I can show Mr. P, since it never made it home because as soon as I saw it I posted it on my bulletin board in my office. It was a huge hit with the people in my office.

Isn't it funny?
He really does look like he is saying hi! It had me cracking up for a good hour!

I had such a great and relaxing weekend. It was just what I needed after such a rough week. I was sad for it to come to such a quick end.

How was your weekend?

Fun with Jewelry

I really like these Tarina Tarantino earrings:

But at $63 dollars a pair, there was no way I was going to buy them. From the description on her site the pearl is a Swarovski glass pearl and the stones on the post are Swarovski Crystals. It does not say if the actual post is sterling silver or not, but I will assume that it is.

So after a little bit of digging I found the materials to make my own "Swarovski Glass Pearl Drop Earrings" for about 10% of the cost of the original.

The earring posts are not 100% alike. But they are sterling silver, have the little bit of bling like the inspiration and the pearls are Swarovski glass pearls.

I liked them so much I made a dark grey version of the earrings*.

What do you think?

Apartment Decorating: The Bedroom - Part One

I am a little bit tired of how everything is looking in our apartment. So I have decided to make some decor changes. There is not much that I can do, since we do live in an apartment and we are not allowed to paint or do any other big cosmetic changes but at least there are other ways I can make a change with out doing anything that would get me in trouble with the management office or breaking the bank.

So I am going to start my redecoration project with the bedroom.

Problem: My closet is a mess, my vanity area does not look much better. We have no curtains on the windows and the walls for the most part are bare. Also, Mr. P's side of the bed needs a bedside table. Right now he has to put all his stuff on the floor because I high jacked the table he used to have.

Solution: Make curtains, buy new bedding, buy a new side table for Mr.P, refinish my side table, add picture's to the wall, clean up and re-organize my closet and vanity area, and add some color to the bedroom.

So here is my plan:

When I lived at home I had a black chandelier in my bedroom. I had begged for one for three years and finally on my 16th birthday when I came home from school I had this great black iron chandelier in my room. It was fantastic. It was not very big but it was perfect. I still love the idea of having a chandelier in the room. Since I cannot have one in my apartment, I can have a decal of one. I found this decal on Etsy for $30. I am thinking of putting it on the wall over the bed. What do you guys think of it?

I also found another one that says "Get Naked". I am sure Mr. P would like that one better, LOL. But this is my project, so I am putting what I want. hehehe....

This table I found on the Ikea website for $15. This table would be perfect, enough space to put all his stuff and it satisfies my crafting side because I will be able to paint it in whatever color I want. I will be staining the wood red, I already have the stain so I do not have to spend extra money on that. Also, you cannot beat the price.

This duvet set I found on the Ikea website for $20. It is in my favorite color and the price is just right for a queen size Duvet and two pillow cases.

I did not find the curtain fabric I was looking for online, so I will be heading to the fabric store to hunt for it. I have to measure the windows to see how much fabric I need and then check out the prices.

That is about it. What do you think? I only have time to work on this on the weekends. So while Mr. P studies for his test, I will be busy at work with our bedroom.

So far the tally for the room make over is $75. With the decal being the most expensive thing. I may change my mind on the decal and paint my own painting to hang over the bed. Which thinking about it now I am liking that idea much better and it will bring the price total down.

I am starting this weekend with my closet. I will post the before and after picture's when the whole project is complete.

Ciao! xoxo

Econo Chic: The Basic Manicure

We know times are hard and we are all cutting down on spending. Usually the first thing to be cut is our beauty regimen such as manicures, pedicures, facials, etc. Well every Sunday I will bring you some information on how to DIY those things we enjoy ourselves. This week DIY is The Basic Manicure.

It costs women on average $360 a year to get a basic manicure and that is figuring that you go twice a month and that is not including tip and tax. There are those that go once a week and get other services such as acrylics, nail designs, etc which can easily double that price tag. It might not seem like a lot of money since that money is spent over the year but that money can come in handy in a pinch.

I will use me as an example. I used to spend $720 just on my manicures a year. Once I started doing my own nails I started saving $620 a year (I spend about $100 a year on my supplies.).

Now since the SO and I will not be taking a vacation this year because seriously if I am not going to get a manicure because of the price tag there is no way we will spend somewhere around two thousand dollars on a vacation but at the same time we need to get away. We have stressful jobs and we need to be able to get away, even if it is for a weekend to relax.

This of course lit the light bulb in my head, why not take the money that I am saving on my manicures and take a weekend trip somewhere!?! You can read more about $620 weekend getaway on next Sunday’s Econo Chic post.

Anyway, back to the topic on hand. Bellow is how I do my basic manicure. If you have any questions or comments let me know.

What you will need:

• Cotton to remove polish and Q-tips to correct mistakes, you can also buy a corrector pen but why spend the money when q-tips and acetone can do the same job?
• Polish Remover
• Nail Buffer and Crystal Nail File
• Whitening Nail Paste and Hand Scrub
• Hand Lotion; get one that has sunscreen in it. The one I use is SPF 15
• Nail polish base, Nail polish of color of your choosing, and top coat
• Nail polish Dryer; there are many types, I use the spray
• Not Shown because I forgot to add it, Cuticle Oil

The orange stick shown can be used for a number of things, I hardly ever use it but it comes in handy sometimes. I also show a cuticle clipper I suggest you do not clip your cuticles. I use this tool because I have a bad habit of biting the skin around my nails so I use the cuticle clipper to clip loose skin. It is a horrible habit I picked up when I was a kid; while other kids bite their nails I bite the skin around my nails. :-(

Step One:
Remove old nail polish, file nails with crystal nail file to desired length and shape using short strokes, do not just saw your nails back and forth this will make your nails week and can cause chips. Then take nail buffer and buff your nails.

Step Two: (Not Pictured)
Use whitening paste and scrub nails with nail brush, then scrub hands with hand scrub, dry hands and apply lotion.
*This is optional but after I apply lotion to my hands I take a q-tip and dip it in rubbing alcohol and I clean just the nails with it to remove all excess lotion of the nails so that the nail polish applies better to nails.

Step Three:
I then apply base coat to my nails and let dry. After that is dry I then apply nail polish. When I apply my nail polish I apply the first stroke down the center of the nail then I do each side. Give the nail polish some time to set/dry between coats. After you are done applying your color, apply a fast drying topcoat.

*I have also learned that leaving my thumbs for last I make the least amount of mistakes. So do all your other nails first and when you are done do your thumbs.

Step Four:
If you have made any mistakes take a q-tip dip it in nail polish remover and clean it up. I also take a small piece of cotton and wrap it on the end of an orange stick when I need to get to an area that a q-tip is too large to get close to avoid smudging the nail polish.

*This is also optional; after you are done spray some nail dryer to your nails. If you use a fast drying topcoat you do not really need to use it. I do use it because I am impatient and want my nails dried ASAP so I give it a little help.

Step Five:
Enjoy your pretty nails! I do my nails once a week or until they start to chip. To keep the nail polish fresh and to help it last longer, every other day apply one coat of your topcoat to keep your manicure looking fresh.

I did not list the name of the products that I use because everyone has their own preference on what they like but if you would like some suggestions or the name of the products I use just let me know.

Until next time, Ciao!! Xoxoxo
